If you think age is a barrier, then you might end up on the wrong side. “Age is not a barrier to enter the world of knowledge”.
– Uncovering One Life in One Story
Such is the case of 104-year-old Kuttiyamma who proved the above statement by passing a literacy test, conducted by the state literacy campaign in the Kottayam district of Kerala, with a score of 89 out of 100 marks.
Kuttiyamma had never been to school and recently began attending Saksharatha classes. She was taught by her teachers to read and write in Malayalam, and now she can read newspapers and write letters. This course is equivalent to elementary education and includes the Malayalam alphabet, the ability to write your own address, and basic maths. Kuttiyamma, who never went to school, was also able to earn a perfect score in math.
Rehna John, a saksharatha prerak who taught Kuttiyamma, said she was an avid student.
Many hoped that Kuttiyamma would continue to inspire people for generations, while a few social media users were provoked by her commitment to her studies. Some feel that the success of the 104-year-old woman proved to be a testament to her determination to achieve any milestone.
