Oprah’s childhood was full of abuse and she was raised by her strict grandmother until the age of 6. Back then Oprah also wore dresses made of potato sacks. “She whipped me so badly that I had welts on my back and the welts would bleed. So then I got another whipping for getting blood on the dress” – Oprah

From an age of 9 to 13, she was sexually abused by her cousin, uncle, and a family friend. At an age of 14, Oprah became pregnant, but sadly the baby was born prematurely and died in the hospital a week later. Crossing all the difficulties at such a young age, Oprah moved away to live with her father in Tennessee, where she started pursuing communications at Tennessee State University.

During high school, Winfrey started co-anchoring at the local news, and she was the youngest news anchor and the first black woman for Nashville’s WLAC-TV.

In 1983, Oprah had a breakthrough when she started hosting Chicago’s WLS-TV @low-rated half-hour morning talk show. Within no time, it became the HIGHEST RATED TALK SHOW in Chicago.

Three years later, her show was expanded to a full hour, renamed “The Oprah Winfrey” show, and went national making Winfrey a MILLIONAIRE.
