Billionaire Gautam Adani’s group on Saturday acknowledged its entry into the telecommunications spectrum that it says will be used to build a private network to support its businesses from airports to electricity and data centers. The Adani group said in a statement that as India prepares to roll out the next generation of 5G services through this auction, they are one of the many applicants partaking in the open bidding process.

Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Friday that the Adani group has made a surprise entry that will pit it squarely against Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio and telecom sovereign Sunil Bharti Mittal’s Airtel.

Adani Group plans to employ the airwaves for its data center and the nifty app it is building to support businesses from electricity distribution to airports, and gas retail to ports.

As we build our own digital platform encompassing super apps, edge data centers, and industry command and control centers, we will need ultra high-quality data streaming capabilities through a high frequency and low latency 5G network across all our businesses,” they said.

Applications for the July 26 auction, including those capable of providing fifth-generation or 5G telecommunications services such as ultra-high-speed internet, closed on Friday with at least four bids.

Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, three private parties in the telecom sector have signed up.

The fourth applicant is the Adani Group, which has recently acquired National Long Distance (NLD) and International Long Distance (ILD) licenses. Adani group even said, “If we are awarded 5G spectrum in the open bidding, it will also align with our recent announcement of significantly increasing the Adani Foundation’s investments in education, healthcare, and skill development in rural areas, each of which stands to benefit from 5G technology,”. They even added that all of this is aligned with nation-building philosophy and support Atmanirbhar Bharat.

A total of 72,097.85 MHz of spectrum worth at least Rs 4.3 lakh crore will be placed in the block during the auction, which will start on July 26, 2022.
